If Nelly goes upward, she needs to make her way through the Tower of Light until she reaches the floor, while if she moves down she must find a way back to the tower to continue her adventure.
A unique feature of the game is that the rope Nelly uses to reduce the rope is a reflection of the emotions and mental state of mind. If she's happy or unhappy, she'll use another kind of rope and if she is angry, she'll use a different rope altogether.
